Perhaps something from the vine.
Whenever I'm caught between two evils, I take the one I've never tried. |

The General gives a small bow to the two beautiful women.
"Yes, a glass of hearty red wine would do." He smiles at the barmaid. "Bring a bottle of your best burgundy." He nods his head toward the tall brunette beauty. "Will you join me for a glass? Miss.....?" His hand indicates a free table for two close by. |

Lordy Mercy what that man does to me! Scarlet tried not to let her hands tremble as she carried the bottle and glasses over to his table.

Taking the offered chair. "Reign, Ryan Reign. I must confess I don't have a clue about wines."
Wow this man filled the room. |

Maximus' hand shot out to steady the bottle and glasses the barmaid brought. He glanced into her eyes. His voice a low rumble.
"Let me help you with those." He easily uncorked the bottle, poured a small amount in one glass and tasted it. The aroma and the bouquet were fine. He nodded to her. "A good choice, Miss." He filled the other glass and held it out to Ryan. "Ryan Reign." The name flowed over his tongue like the wine. "Sip it lightly. You will enjoy the flavor much more." He raised his glass to her and then to his lips. |

Taking a sip of the ruby liquid Ryan watched this man and how tall he seemed even sitting. Could he be the one for her task?
He had an air of control and knowledge. And the wine was wonderful. The usual five dollar bottles from the grocery store were just grape juice compared to this. "This is wonderful. Did I hear correctly that you are a General?" |

She was looking at him speculatively. He nodded.
"Yes, I was a General. In another place and time." He smiled wistfully. A moment longing for home. Nothing remained. "I'm glad you are enjoying the wine. Is there something you wish to ask of me?" |

A touch of sadness crossed her face for a moment then was gone. Ryan thought she saw a glimpse of the same pass through his eyes.
"The past is like a sword isn't it. It can make you smile or make you bleed." Shaking her head to clear that thought. "You are very percptive I do have a request. Please don't think me forward. I have a cousin she is having a hard time adjusting to a new life. I can see you have a patient air. If your not seeing anyone would you have dinner with us? I promise she's not a crone we could be sisters though I don't think she's as plain. So what do say General care to take a risk? If there's already someone I understand." Stop babbling you country twit and smile! |

Unseen by both of them, a slender figure with long pale hair had entered the room, standing a long moment behind a wide drape as she watched the interaction.
"Maximussss," she sighed, gazing with longing at the form of the General. In her hand she held his gladius, though it hung downward at her side. It was heavy and her arm was tired. How long had she carried it now? She couldn't even remember. She watched a moment more, then the words of the other, words of urging Maximus, her Maximus, to meet another were more than she could bear. She slipped out from behind the drape, making her way through the crowds. Softly, almost feather-light, she lay her hand on the General's forearm, stepping into view as she did so. Her lips curved slightly, trembling as she awaited the moment he would see her. As his head began to turn toward her, the sword slipped from her shaking fingers, clanging noisily to the floor. |

"Oh. I take it you are seeing someone. Sorry. Thank you for the wine and your time." She was blushing from head to toe. "If you ever need a friend you can find me at the library."
Ryan politely left the couple to their reunion. |

Maximus nodded to the retreating woman. Distracted. He heard the clunk of a gladius as it struck the floor. He turned. The gods were playing with his eyes. He looked up at her. It couldn't be.
If he was here, she could be. His flaxen haired beauty. Not given to public displays of affection, he nevertheless rose and took her hand and pulled her into his arms Her name escaped from his lips before they crushed down on hers. "Jo....." |

When he finished kissing her, he saw the tears in her eyes. One rolled down her cheek. His rough thumb captured it and dried it off.
A light soothing sshh sound escaped his lips. "It's all right, Jo. We have found each other." He guided her to a chair. He picked his gladius easily up off the floor and set it on across a chair. It felt good in his arm. He sat beside her and took her hand in his. "Rest, dearest. And tell me how you came to be here?" |

She couldn't think. She simply could not think. His big hand
was wrapped around hers and all her soul had poured into it, her entire essence seeming to be enveloped within those warm encircling brown fingers. So she just quietly looked there, looked at his hand, and only after long moments did she lift her eyes to his. "He finally released me." Her voice was scarcely audible. Her gaze dropped back to his hand. "I...I never thought he would." |

Maximus pulled her close to his chest. She needed the warmth and strength he could give her. She was depleted from the stife and struggle she had endured.
"It is now over. Take strength from me, Joimus. You are safe here and now. You are under my protection." His lips lightly brushed her hair. He had lost all that mattered in his life. He would not lose another that he could protect. He would not! "Tell me, Joimus. Do not hold the pain inside." He brushed her silky long hair off her face. |

How good it was to see his gladius there beside him, there where it belonged. She looked around the crowded room, not wishing to speak in such close company. "Outside," she
whispered, "where we can be alone." As she crossed the wide floor, Maximus close behind her, her yellow satin slippers left small traces of blood with each step, signaling the General's storyline would be filled with drama right from the beginning. Still, she walked with her back straight, her chin slightly up. He was so close his breath came warm on her neck, filling her with his presence, with the very scent of him. Not until she found a tree some distance back into the wood, a large flat rock at its base, did she stop. Once seated, she took his hand again, pulling just enough so he would know she wanted him to sit beside her. "I hesitated," she began, "to enter the Lounge. I was not sure you would be there, my Lord." |

He smiled briefly. "I'm not sure why I was there. It has been..." He trailed off, and fought for the right words. "Difficult to adjust to this time and place."
He sat down close to her and observed her bloodied feet. He drew them onto his lap and gently removed the slippers. "I would bathe your feet to soothe them if I had water. And apply a salve. I will later." "Proceed, Joimus." He glanced around to verify. "We are alone." |

"It was just so far," she looked at her feet in his lap, "you know...to walk. And, then, I wasn't even sure you'd be here."
Pausing, she played with her fingers a moment, searching for the right words, then lifted her eyes to his again. "But I had to risk it...had to try. I'd heard you might be here, but it just didn't seem...right...somehow that you would. I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw you." She swallowed hard. "When he sent you away, I...well, I thought I might never find you again. And then when I found he'd kept your sword, I knew the mission was a false one. I only wish...." |

She was exhausted. He saw it in almost every breath she took. He took her hands in his.
"You have found me, Joimus. That is a source of joy for us. Tell this to me and we can try to put it behind us both. It was necessary I leave. I could not stay a moment longer." He held her hands lovingly. A link to what is good and true to him. His voice came out low, choked. "Tell me what you wish. And then I will put you to bed to rest." |
